Son Rompe Pera aren't a band so much as a movement — a Mexican sextet playing the most confrontational cumbia on the planet. "We are rockers who play cumbia," says Mongo Gama. The Los Angeles Times put it another way, calling them "one of the most energetic acts in Latin punk. Or punk, period."

The story starts in Naucalpan, in the streets and homes and cemeteries where the Gama brothers — Kacho, Mongo, and Kilos — grew up hauling a marimba to weddings, birthdays, and funerals alongside their father José, known as Batuco. To them it was old man's music. They wanted punk, ska, hardcore, psychobilly. They wanted to mosh. When Batuco died in 2016, they realized they didn't have to choose. Son Rompe Pera was born from that collision, keeping their father's name for the family project and running his instrument straight through a wall of distortion.

Since 2017 — with Raúl Albarran on bass, Ricardo López on drums, and Oscar Murillo on congas — they've taken that sound from street festivals to Coachella, Vive Mexico + España, and NPR's Tiny Desk, touring Mexico, the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, the U.K., and Europe, and picking up collaborators from Los Lobos and Fishbone to Frente Cumbiero, LA LOM, La Doña, and Inspector along the way.

Marimbazos De Oro, their third album and first for Mixto Records, is the widest they've ever swung. Produced by Grammy-nominated guitarist and psychedelic bolerista Adrian Quesada, it opens Norteño with "Arboledas," featuring LA LOM bandleader Zac Sokolow, then detonates into the pop-punk-meets-oi of "Sombra" with Spike from Me First and the Gimme Gimmes on backing vocals. "José Dolores" is their first real move into salsa — a tribute to their father, carried by the horn section of Bogotá salsa-punks La Pambelé. Trish Toledo turns up on the bolero "Me Olvidaste," and Quesada himself plays guitar on lead single "Reptilio."

For the first time, the band says, the complete story gets told — through every genre they actually love, not just the one they invented. Fresh start for the faithful, front door for everyone else. Whether you're crowd surfing or dancing cumbia, you don't need the lyrics to get it.
